God’s Hero’s of Faith In The Hall of Fame
"MOSES" The Model Wanderer
Hebrews 11:23-27
By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment.
By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
INTRODUCTION:
"The life of Moses presents a series of striking antitheses. He was the child of a slave, and the son of a queen. He was born in a hut, and lived in palace. He inherited poverty, and enjoyed unlimited wealth. He was the leader of armies, and the keeper of flocks. He was the mightiest of warriors, and the meekest of men. He was educated in the court, and dwelt in the desert. He had the wisdom of Egypt, and the faith of a child. He was fitted for the city, and wandered in the wilderness. He was tempted with the pleasures of sin, and endured the hardships of virtue. He was backward in speech, and talked with God. He had the rod of a shepherd, and the power of the Infinite. He was a fugitive from Pharaoh, and an ambassador from heaven. He was the giver of the Law, and the forerunner of grace. He died alone on Mount Moab, and appeared with Christ in Judea. No man assisted at his funeral, yet God buried him." (Dr. I.M. Haldeman).
MOSES' WAS THE MAN WHO PUT GOD FIRST
Exodus Chapters 2, 3 & 4
I. THE CHARACTER OF MOSES -
1. Let us Observe His People.
(1) Look at their Prosperity. "...and the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Exodus 1:7. At this time Israel became mightier than the Egyptians.
(2)Look at their Persecution. "...Now there arose up a king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we. Come on, let us deal wisely with them; least they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities. Pilhom and Raamses. Exodus 1: 8-11.
(3) Look at their Preservation.
"...But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew . “Exodus 1:12. Israel is a people that persecution adds to their growth instead of their destruction. We have met Moses People now.
2. Let us Observe His Providence -
(1) His Mother's Work. "And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put it in the flags by the river's brink."
Moses mother like the true believer today reveals her faith in God by what she does. Faith and works are Siamese twins that cannot be separated without death. She believed, and to prove that she worked. We have seen his mother's work.
(2) His Sister's Watch.
"And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. Exodus 2: 4. No doubt Moses' mother left his sister near at hand to assure his safety until God accomplished His work.
(3) His God's Will.
"And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when see saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. And when she opened it, she saw the child: and behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews children. Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the HEBREW women, that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. Exodus 2:5-8.
In this complete story we can see how God's will is preformed. He uses human instruments to work with. It took Moses' mother's work and his sister's watch for God's will to be done. God uses you and me to perform His will in this world. Let us work and watch that His will be done.
We see God's providence for Moses in this story. It was not Moses work but God's providence that brought him to the place of fulfilling God's will. God used Moses' mother, sister and Pharaoh's daughter to get him to the place where God wanted him.
3. Let Us Observe Moses' Principles
(1) His Learning - "And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child and nursed it." Exodus 2:9. We observe from this verse that Moses was taught the principles of life from his Hebrew mother. The early years of learning are our most important ones.
(2) His Lodging - "And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said; because I drew him out of the water." Exodus 2:10 After learning good principles at an early age Moses now goes to live in Pharaoh's palace and become an heir to the throne.
(3) His Love - "And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: And he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew. One of his brethren." Exodus 2:11
The love that Moses mother had instilled in his heart for his brethren never left him. The Words, "in those days" reveal days in which if Moses was an Egyptian at heart he would have had no love for this Hebrew.
1. His Readiness To Make A Choice.
"...And he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he We will see the great Egyptian destruction when we reach that stage in our study. But God was assuring Moses of the destruction of his enemies before it ever happened. Just as God assures all believers that there is a final destruction for Satan our enemy in the end. Moses slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me, as thou killest the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
" Notice how Moses looked for a man. Vs. 12 "He saw that there was no man," This Made Moses ready to step in and be God's deliverer for Israel. Sometimes our time of readiness is not God's time.
2. His Renunciation In His Choice -
Hebrews 11:24,25 "By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;"
At this point, when Moses was full grown, he made the choice to go with God and to renounce sin. Truly he put God first.
3. The Results From This Choice -He became Israel's greatest leader and deliverer. And according to Hebrews 11: 26, He rightly esteemed his choice, that in the end he would have greater riches than all he could have acquired in Egypt.
In Exodus three we find God's call to Moses out of the midst of a burning bush. Notice what God revealed to him at the burning bush.
He saw - -
1. The People Of God Distressed -
"And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters: for I know their sorrows." Exodus 3:7 God was telling Moses, that while he had been here in Midian for forty years Israel was still in severe affliction. God brought to his remembrance all the burden's Moses had seen Israel endure down in Egypt.
Also Moses Saw - -
2. The Plan Of God , Deliverance -
"And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey;" Exodus 3:8 We have seen already that God's plan was to get Israel out of Egypt and into Canaan.
Third Moses Saw - -
3. The Pharaoh Of Egypt Defeated -
After God sent Moses to Egypt with ten plagues, we can see God paving the way that would lead to Pharaoh's destruction.
"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the Sea, over against Baal-Zephon: before it shall ye encamp by the Sea. For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, they are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, that he shall follow after them; and I will be honored upon Pharaoh, and all his host: that the Egyptians may know that I am the Lord. And they did so."
We will see the great Egyptian destruction when we reach that stage in our study. But God was assuring Moses of the destruction of his enemies before it ever happened. Just as God assures all believers that there is a final destruction for Satan our enemy in the end.
